Genre Research: Horror

The next genre we are considering is horror.

  • Common camera angles include shooting from a high angles that can make the character appear vulnerable and increase audience identification. Tilt shots add a lot of dramatic tension for shot and can even be used to make the camera seem like the victim on the floor and you are seeing what they are seeing. Point of view shots are an effective way to create suspense. It is important to use your camera angle to create an unsettling feeling within the viewer, which you can achieve by making the image look off balanced.
  • Common editing includes suspense and may include jump scares. Some common elements that appear are characters that could disappear at any moment, dim lighting, a backstory to a monster/villain purpose, and even a possibility for a sequel.
  • Common Mis-En Scene includes silhouettes, underexposure, harsh lighting, projected shadows, etc. all help add to the fearful mood of a horror film. The lighting in horror films is often a dim hue and uses shadows to create tension due to its mysterious and dark atmosphere.
  • Common sound in horror films include. Infrasound is commonly used in horror movies, which is a wavelength of sound that is just out of range for human ears to hear. Other sounds included sound effects such as a scream, scary laughter, and music that indicates that something bad is about to happen. The way the shot is designed can draw the viewer’s see into the frame in a particular way.
  • Examples include It 2, Blood Feast, Truth or Dare, and Hereditary.
  • Some elements that I like are dim lighting, jump scares, using sound effects and music to create suspense, and some characters' going missing
  • Some elements that I would want to stay away from include elements such as vampires, zombies, ghosts, and more. These characters can be difficult to create unless you have lots of special effects and good makeup.
