Genre Decision Blog

We decided to go with thriller. We choose this specific genre instead of mystery and horror because even though they are different, they are also very similar. Thriller is more related to our pitch than the other two genres. During the decision-making process, we realized that thrillers are one genre made up of multiple genres together. It has the mystery, horror, and crime aspects that we want. If we were to do mystery or horror, it would just be one genre. Also, mystery doesn’t have a lot of films to go from. It was hard to get some idea of what a true movie with a ‘mystery genre’ is. We want to leave whoever is watching, on the tip of their toes. We want them to have that moment where if they don’t see the rest, they feel in a sense, ‘incomplete’. Horror is suspenseful, but not as suspenseful as thriller. Also, it is mainly just scary, and we don’t want our film to be all scares. We want to create that tension and release it all at the very end. Horror will create suspense then break it multiple times throughout the film. As a group, we realized that is not something we wanted to do. Thriller is also a very popular genre in films. This gives us lots of options to get some inspiration. We have multiple options to choose what kind of thriller we want to convey in our film. We all agreed and didn’t have to have any sort of debate. We feel it is the best choice for our film.
